Burpee released the Big Boy Tomato in 1949, just as World War II was ending. While the parent varieties are unknown, Big Boy is thought to be bred from ‘Teddy Jones’ and potentially an unknown Ukrainian heirloom tomato. The seeds are still sometimes labeled as “Burpee’s Big Boy Tomato”. Oved Shifriss of Burpee Seeds at their famous Fordhook Farms location in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. These slicer tomatoes are great for sandwiches, fresh salads, and other fresh tomato dishes. They have an old-fashioned tomato taste with a nice balance between tart acidity and sugary sweetness. Big Boy Tomatoes are incredibly popular due to their large size, smooth red peel, and classic round tomato shape.
